Liver transplantations were successfully performed at UMC | Корпоративный фонд "University Medical Center"

On November 23-25, 2023, a master class on “Liver transplantation in children: prevention of complications” was held at the UMC Mother and Child Сenter. The master class was attended by Seisuke Sakamoto, director of the Organ Transplantation Center from Japan, professor, leading transplant surgeon, Seiichi Shimizu, transplant surgeon and Chiaki Funaki, anesthesiologist as well as by doctors of our Center. Two patients underwent successful liver transplantation:

The first patient was diagnosed at birth with a congenital malformation of the biliary system – biliary tract atresia, cirrhosis of the liver. At the age of 1.5 months he underwent the operation “Portenteroanastomy according to the Kasai method” in our Center, which helped to prolong his life up to 4 years. Next, a liver transplant was performed from the living donor – the child’s father. The operation lasted 12 hours and was performed successfully.

The second patient, aged 4 years and 11 months with a diagnosis of “Hepatoblastoma (malignant liver tumor)” had a the tumor which was not subject to surgical treatment, large vessels running to the liver were closed by a tumor thrombus. The patient also successfully underwent a living donor liver transplant from the child’s father. The complex operation included a reconstructive procedure on the vessels using a vessel of the child’s neck and lasted 19 hours.
