UMC launches Doctoral program in Medicine with official accreditation for 5 years | Корпоративный фонд "University Medical Center"

Over the past few years, we have been dedicatedly preparing to launch a doctoral program.

This summer, our program was included in the State Register of Higher and Postgraduate Education Programs. From November 17th to 19th, we underwent an external peer review by the Eurasian Center for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Education.

Following the review, UMC became the first medical organization in Kazakhstan to receive five-year accreditation for a doctoral program. The doctoral program in medicine at UMC is a three-year full-time program for specialists with a master’s degree and completed residency. It is aimed at training physician-researchers capable of conducting independent scientific work.

The program combines clinical practice, research, publications, conference participation, and internships. It fully complies with state requirements and develops competencies for PhD defense and a subsequent academic career. We studied international programs at leading universities and identified four key principles:

1. Complete openness and transparency of procedures

2. Equal access for every applicant

3. Competitive selection based on testing or interview results

4. Non-discrimination of any kind based on gender, age, nationality, language, social status, or beliefs These principles form a fair and objective selection system.

The organization took into account the requirements of the State Educational Standard (GOSO), which requires a master’s degree and residency for admission. However, based on international experience, we propose simplifying the entry criteria: a university degree in medicine in Kazakhstan or a diploma from medical schools at NU and foreign universities* will be mandatory (this issue is currently under discussion with the International Medical Higher Education Institutions). While also introducing academic requirements: a minimum of three years of clinical experience and a proven scientific background, including participation in research and publications in Q1–Q2 journals.
