On August 15 – 17, 2024, the Mother and Child Center UMC hosted a master class “Thoracoscopic elongation of the esophagus in atresia of the esophagus with large diastasis in newborns and children”.
Esophageal atresia is a congenital malformation when upper and lower sections of the esophagus are separated.
Professor Dariusz Wojciech Patkowski, MD, PhD, pediatric surgeon and urologist, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology at the Silesian Piasts Medical University of Wroclaw, Poland, was invited to conduct the training. He is the author of a low-traumatic method of forming own esophagus in children.
During the master class, specialists from the Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery at UMC, together with the professor, performed operations on our little patients.
The collaboration with Dariusz Patkowski has been going on for two years. For the first time, such a master class was held in our Center in 2022. Surgery to preserve one’s own esophagus in case of esophageal atresia in Kazakhstan is carried out only at the Mother and Child Center UMC together with a professor from Poland.
