Residency admission
Residency is a form of postgraduate advanced medical training in clinical specialties.
Persons with a document indicating the qualification “doctor” shall be admitted to the residency.
Depending on the specialty and previous training, the duration of a residency study program is 2 – 4 years.
Residency educational programs and terms of study:
Allergology and immunology for adults, children – 2 years
Anesthesiology and intensive care for adults, children – 3 years
Cardiology adults, children – 3 years
Cardiac surgery adults, children – 4 years
Pediatric surgery – 3 years
Medical genetics – 2 years
Neurology for adults, children – 2 years
Neonatology – 2 years
Nephrology for adults, children – 2 years
General surgery – 3 years
Oncology and hematology for children – 2 years
Otorhinolaryngology for adults, children – 3 years
Ophthalmology for adults, children – 3 years
Pathological anatomy – 2 years
Radiology – 2 years
Rheumatology for adults, children – 2 years
Traumatology – orthopedics for adults, children – 3 years
Urology and andrology for adults, children – 3 years
Maxillofacial surgery for adults, children – 3 years
Endocrinology for adults, children – 2 years.
The cost of studying at the UMC residency is 1,811,300 tenge for each academic year.
Requirements for entering residency
1.1. Citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan have the right to receive on a competitive basis, in accordance with the state educational order, free postgraduate education if they receive education at this level for the first time
1.2 Admission of foreign citizens for training in the residency on a paid basis is carried out according to the results of interview which is held by the admission committee of CF “UMC” during the calendar year. Admission of foreign citizens is carried out in accordance with the academic calendar 5 (five) days before the beginning of the next academic period. Obtaining free postgraduate education by foreigners on a competitive basis in accordance with the state educational order is determined by international treaties of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
1.3 Number of persons, admitted to the residency of CF “UMC” for training at the expense of budget, is determined within the limits of the state educational order, placed annually on a competitive basis by the central executive body in the field of health care.
1.4 Admission of persons entering the residency is carried out by placing a state educational order at the expense of the republican budget or the local budget, as well as tuition fees at the expense of the student’s own funds and other sources.
1.5 Applications for UMC’s residency program are accepted annually from 3 to 25 July. Residency entrance exams are held annually from 8 to 16 August, and admission is by 28 August

The procedure for admission to the residency
2.1 Residents with a “medical doctor” qualification are admitted to the residency.
2.2 Educational certificates issued by foreign educational organisations are recognised or nostrified according to the procedure established by law.
2.3 Persons applying for CF “UMC” residency shall submit the following documents:
1) application to the Head of CF “UMC” or person authorized by him (sample application);
2) document on higher education with attachments. When admission original document of higher education with attachments should be submitted to the Admissions Committee;
3) certificate on completion of internship with annexes. Upon admission, the original certificate of completion of internship with annexes shall be submitted to the admission commission;
3-1) copy of the certificate of health care specialist;
4) copy of the identity card;
5) copy of certificate of English language proficiency test (TOEFL or IELTS):
International English Language Test System Academic (IELTS Academic), threshold score – at least 5.0;
Test of English as a Foreign Language Institutional Testing Programm Internet-based Test (TOEFL IBT), threshold score – at least 46 points;
Test of English as a Foreign Language Paper-based testing (TOEFL PBT), threshold score – at least 453;
Test of English as a Foreign Language Institutional Testing Program (TOEFL ITP), threshold score – not less than 460;
6) personnel record sheet (filled in with a photograph);
7) copy of a work record book (for employed persons);
8) copy of marriage certificate (in case of change of surname);
9) medical certificate 075/у;
10) six photos (3×4 cm);
11) recommendation letter from the last place of work/study from the head of the organization/dean (if any);
12) list of research works (if any);
13) letter guaranteeing payment of tuition fees (for those applying at the expense of legal entities);
14) certificate of no criminal record;
15) copy of military service record;
16) binder (plastic), 10 files, envelope (for enrolment).
2.4 Together with the copies of the documents specified in clause 2.3, the originals shall be provided for verification. After verification, the originals shall be returned.
2.5 All documents shall be bound in a binder, the sheets shall be numbered and filed in the document inventory. The title page must contain:
– name and surname of the applicant (full);
– specialty;
– home address, city code, telephone, mobile number, e-mail address;
– the year of admission.
2.6 The application of the applicant’s certificate of completion of internship shall be checked for the prerequisites required for the study of the respective residency program.
2.7 In the absence of the necessary prerequisites the applicant is allowed to learn them on a fee basis.
2.8 List of prerequisites necessary for mastering the appropriate educational program of residency, determined by CF “UMC” independently.
2.9 Training on profile disciplines in residency begins after full mastering of prerequisites by the applicant.
2.10 Persons who have a score of at least 3.33 on the final state certification of internship and a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 are admitted to the entrance exams for the residency at CF “UMC”.
The procedure for the entrance examination
3.1. Persons entering the residency shall take an entrance examination on the profile of a group of educational programs (speciality), which shall be conducted by CF “UMC” independently.
3.2. Entrance examination on specialty shall be conducted by CF “UMC” independently. Herewith applicants take an entrance exam on a specialty only at CF “UMC”.
3.3. Entrance exam shall be held by CF “UMC” in the form of standardized interview to determine the professional competence of the applicant according to the schedule.
3.4. Entrance exams shall be formed on the basis of standard curriculum on specialty of higher medical education.
3.5. Retake of entrance exams in the year of their taking shall not be allowed.
3.6. Examination Commission shall make a decision for each candidate on the basis of competition based on the results of entrance examinations.
3.7. For consideration of applications of persons who disagree with the results of entrance examinations is created an appeal committee.
3.8. Application for appeal is filed to the chairman of the Appeals Commission by a person who enters the residency. Applications are accepted after announcement of results of entrance examinations up to 13.00 of the next day and considered within one day from the date of application.
3.9. The Appeals Commission works with each person individually. In case of non-appearance of person to the meeting of appeal board, his application for appeal is not considered.
Residency enrolment
4.1 Persons who achieved the highest score of entrance examination, but not less than 75 points on 100-point grading scale are admitted to the residency of CF “UMC”.
4.2 In case of the same amount of competitive marks, priority at admission to the residency is given to those who have medical experience and scientific achievements, corresponding to the profile of educational program:
1) scientific publications, including those in ranked scientific publications;
2) certificates of scientific developments;
3) certificates of scientific scholarships, grants;
4) diplomas for participation in scientific conferences and competitions.
4.3 For participation in competition on the state educational order at the expense of local budget the applicants shall submit the application to CF “UMC” not later than August 25. The competition is held in accordance with the scores of the entrance examination for groups of educational programs (specialty) taking into account clauses 4.1, 4.2.
4.4 In order to enroll, you must submit all original documents according to the list by 25 August 2024:
1) an application form addressed to the Head of CF “UMC” or a person authorized by him/her;
2) original document of higher education with attachments;
3) original certificate on completion of internship;
3-1) a copy of the health care professional certificate;
4) a copy of an identity document;
5) copy of certificate on passing the English language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS) in accordance with subparagraph 5 of paragraph 2.3
6) personnel record sheet (filled in with a photo);
7) a copy and the original of a work record book (for employed persons)/new work record book for those who do not have work experience;
8) a copy of marriage certificate (in case of change of family name);
9) a medical certificate 075/y in accordance with;
10) six 3×4 cm photographs;
11) recommendation letter from the last place of work/study from the head of the organization/dean (if any);
12) list of research works (if any)
13) letter guaranteeing payment of tuition fees (for those entering at the expense of legal entities);
14) binder (plastic), 10 files;
15) certificate of criminal record;
16) copy of military service record.
4.5 After submission of personal documents, a personal health booklet shall be required by 1 September 2024:
1) A personal health booklet must be issued in order to gain admission to the wards. The list of necessary specialists and tests for medical examination includes:
Medical examination:
1) Therapist;
2) X-ray (scan, description) once a year;
3) HIV test – once a year;
4) Hepatitis B vaccination (triple vaccination);
5) Dermatovenerologist + syphilis exam every 6 months (microreaction test);
6) Staphylococcus aureus examination every 6 months;
7) Carrier tests for dysentery, salmonellosis, typhoid fever, paratyphoid A and B every 6 months;
8) Testing for helminth eggs every 6 months;
9) Viral hepatitis B and viral hepatitis C testing every 6 months. Hepatitis B vaccination (for breastfeeding and pregnant women, a supporting medical certificate of medical exemption must be provided);
2) Certificate of Basic Life Support training;
3) Provide original certificate of 20-digit bank account from Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan for scholarship (for students on state grant).
Entrance exam
THE ENTRANCE EXAM FOR THE UMC FACULTY RESIDENCY WILL BE HELD FROM 8 TO 16 AUGUST 2024.
1.Persons who have achieved a minimum grade of 3.33 on the Final State Examination and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
2.Persons entering the residency, pass the entrance exam on the profile of educational programs (specialty), which is held CF “UMC” independently.
3. Entrance examinations are held by CF “UMC” in the form of standardized interview to determine the professional competence of the applicant according to the schedule.
4. The results of entrance exams shall be announced on the day of entrance exams.
5. Retake of entrance exams in the year in which they were taken is not allowed.
