On September 16–17, 2025, within the framework of the VIII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana, a delegation from the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital (Rome, Vatican) arrived, led by its President, Mr. Tiziano Onesti.
The purpose of the visit was to strengthen cooperation with University Medical Center (UMC), the largest medical cluster in Kazakhstan, which includes the Center for Maternity and Childhood. As a result of the meetings, a Declaration of Intent was signed, expanding the previously concluded Memorandum of Understanding.
The document provides for the launch of joint programs in strategically important areas, including:
- diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and autism in children;
- development of transplantology;
- cooperation in pediatric oncohematology;
- diagnosis and treatment of rare rheumatologic diseases and autoinflammatory syndromes;
- diagnosis and treatment of congenital immune system defects;
- diagnosis and treatment of thrombophilia and thrombocytopathy in children;
- exchange of experience and joint clinical consultations.
Speaking at the Congress,
Mr. Tiziano Onesti, President of Bambino Gesù, emphasized:
“Every child has the right to live with dignity, to be recognized as
worthy of attention and care. True health is not only the absence of disease,
but a state of complete physical, mental and spiritual well-being. To promote
health is to promote peace.”
He also highlighted the
high professionalism of UMC specialists, particularly in pediatrics and women’s
health:
“Here we have found great dedication and professionalism, especially
among the female physicians, who represent a highly qualified workforce. We are
ready to share our expertise and achievements with everyone, welcoming
exchanges and joint research,” he added.
Special attention was also given to the humanitarian mission of Bambino Gesù, which carries out international cooperation projects “from Myanmar to Gaza, from Peru to Côte d’Ivoire, from Iran to Cambodia.”
The visit to Astana marked an important step in strengthening medical and humanitarian ties between Kazakhstan and the Vatican. The cooperation between Bambino Gesù and UMC will serve as the foundation for new initiatives aimed at protecting children’s rights and improving the quality of medical care.
