An innovative system for the preservation, treatment and transportation of donor organs was presented today at the exhibition of the capital’s enterprises for the production of medical devices in Astana, which was visited by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Scientific developments and medical technologies of Kazakhstani enterprises were presented at the exhibition in the capital. One of them is the innovative ALEM device (Astana Life Ex-situ Machine), which allows to maintain the functionality of a donor organ outside the body for more than 24 hours. The system is equipped with built-in sensors and monitoring that monitor key physiological parameters: temperature, pressure, concentration of gases in the blood, etc.
This scientific solution opens up new perspectives for patients, doctors, and the entire healthcare system. Transplantologists will be able to transport organs for thousands of kilometers, diagnose the condition of the organ before transplantation, thereby reducing the risk of unsuccessful operations, adjust and treat organs outside the body, increasing the number of donor materials suitable for transplantation.
Presenting the unique system, which was developed by Kazakhstani engineers and specialists from the UMC Heart Center, project manager Yuriy Pya noted that in May of this year, construction of a plant for assembling the device with a total area of 3,000 square meters has begun. Commissioning is scheduled for June 2026.
Serial production of ALEM will make it possible to equip Kazakhstani clinics with domestic devices and thereby reduce dependence on foreign analogues. In addition, the plant will produce consumables used in transplantology, plastic vacutainers (blood tubes), containers for storing biomaterials and drainage jars, diagnostic modules and digital components to expand the medical ecosystem. All components, as well as building materials, will be of Kazakhstani production.
The company will create 35 new working places and become a training center for universities, engineering laboratories and clinical research. At the same time, all proceeds from the plant’s activities will be used to develop scientific projects and support innovative solutions such as ALEM, as well as to implement research and educational projects of the “Heart Center Foundation” Public Fund in the field of cardiac surgery, cardiology and transplantation.
It should be noted that in April 2025, the head of the scientific project and the founder of the Fund, Yuriy Pya, together with a team of cardiac surgeons from the UMC Heart Center and engineers, personally presented the Kazakh development at the Expo 2025 World Exhibition in Osaka (Japan).
After visiting the exhibition, the Head of State noted the importance of developing the domestic pharmaceutical industry and the production of medical devices.
