The beginning of 2025 was marked by important events in the field of medicine. On January 20, two patients who were on the waiting list for an organ transplant were successfully operated on at the University Medical Center clinics. The donor was a 45-year-old man from the Almaty region, who was diagnosed with brain death by medical council. The man’s family agreed to organ donation, thereby giving four people from different regions of our country a chance for life.
Two operations were performed at UMC clinics: a lung transplant was performed at the Heart Center, and a kidney transplant was performed for a 17-year-old teenager at the Mother and Child Center.
The team of the Heart Center UMC transplanted a donor heart to a 43-year-old patient. The operation was performed at the Research Institute of Cardiology of Internal Diseases. This was the second heart transplant performed in Almaty. Carrying out these complex operations in other regions of the country contributes to the development of local transplantation and brings affordable medicine to every patient.
Organ transplantation is one of the most difficult operations; however the experience, skills and technical equipment allow performing them at a high level in our country. Heart and lung transplants are performed only from a posthumous donor, with confirmation of brain death. However, the further process largely depends on the decision of the close relatives of the potential donor.
Every second is invaluable during transportation of donated organs. The well-coordinated teamwork of various government and medical services is the key to the success of organ transplantation.
We express our sincere gratitude to the donors and their families, as well as to all those involved in the development of the transplant program in Kazakhstan. Thanks to your dedication and nobility, we are getting closer to ensuring that every patient in need can get a new chance for life!
