The geneticists of the Mother and Child Center UMC held a master class at the “Research Center of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery” JSC | Корпоративный фонд "University Medical Center"

On August 20 – 21, 2024, the geneticists of the Mother and Child Center UMC held a master class on the diagnosis of minimal residual disease in children with acute leukemia at the “Research Center of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery” JSC.

At the master class, Mirgul Bayanova, head of the Department of Clinical and Genetic diagnostics of the UMC CAD of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Genetics, Candidate of Medical Sciences shared her experience. During the discussion, various aspects of the diagnosis of acute leukemia in children were discussed. The further program of the master class was aimed at practical work in the molecular genetic laboratory. The master class was attended by doctors of the departments of oncology and hematology, specialists of the clinical and diagnostic laboratory of the Research Center.

Step–by-step training of personnel in the methodology and the interpretation of results allowed the most effective implementation of diagnostics, which ultimately allowed improving the results of therapy for the most common malignant tumor in children – acute leukemia.

Minimal residual disease, or MRD, is a small number of tumor cells that can cause the development of recurrence after achieving clinical and hematological remission of the disease. It is not possible to detect this clone of cells with conventional microscopy. Thus, the detection of MRD at the stages of therapy can change therapeutic tactics, for example, replace standard polychemotherapy with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In modern oncohematological practice, the definition of MRD in acute leukemia has become a mandatory area of scientific and clinical research.
